Abilify 5 in Questions
How long does 5 mg of Abilify and .25 Xanax take to leave your breastmilk? My doctor put me on both.. I decided after taking them yesterday at 5pm I really really love and miss breastfeeding and I do not want to take them anymore.. How long until I can again? Thanks

daddyrx replied: "I would talk to your doctor. It is strongly advised against breast feeding while on Abilify (aripiprazole). Abilify (actually, its metabolite) has a long elimination half life, approx. 96 hours. Pharmacokinetically, it will take approx. 30 days to be safe to breast feed. The Xanax (alprazolam) will be long gone by then."

has anyone been on abilify 5 mgs? I am not sleeping good. I been put on it. last thursday started. how long will it take for to feel effect?

Susas replied: "Why are you on it? Sometimes they put you on it when you really need something totally different. It probably has done as much as its going to. I've never taken that much. I am sceptical of the drug. If you can't sleep well, it might be doing more harm than good."

3kids4me replied: "They put you on it as a sleep aid????? My daughter USED to be on it.....I personally didn't like it. Therefore she is no longer on it. But it's not a sleep aid."

any one out there been on abilify 5 mg and after a month have bad dizziness develop,im on it was a bit dizzy a? im getting very dizzy now and wondering if its the abilify any ideas

aquamarine1421 replied: "well if you go to and look up abilify it will tell you one of its side effects is dizzyness allthough its not a serious side effect, but if its a problem for you where you are too dizzy to do normal activities i would tell your doctor, people react to medications in different ways maybe they will give you a smaller dosage or give you a different type of medicine. although its nothing to worry about i would still tell your dr if it bothers you because its there job to get you better but not at the cost of being too dizzy all the time!"

Ally replied: "On same dosage and it only happens once in a while. You will body just needs to adjust to it. Mostly happens when getting up to fast."

Hope replied: "1 If you took Abilify before, without becoming dizzy, it is probably not caused by the drug. #2 Your Dr is the one to address this question to, and the only one who can help you get to the bottom of your dizziness."

Cat Woman replied: "I'm on 5mg of Abilify and have been for about a month as well. I'm not having dizziness, but I'm having problems with smelling things and stuttering. Both of these things have never been a problem before taking the drug. It's not enough of a problem for me to quit taking it as it's helping more serious issues that I'm having. Like another poster said, since all people react to med differently, it's best to talk to your phych about it. Your symptoms may be related to the med, and it may not be. If it's not subsiding after a few weeks, I'd get in to see the doctor right away. You certainly can't deal with that. Abilify isn't the only drug out there of it's kind. Surely you and your doc could find one that doesn't affect you in this manner. GL!"

Is it ok for a person that is a 5'1 weighs 112 pounds to take 5mg of abilify? I was just asking because my doctor is about to up my dose to 5mg due to me having bipolar disorder.

KTDykes replied: "Ideally, you should discuss this with your doctor. However, I don't know that person. Perhaps you've got reasons not to do so or want a second opinion. A sensible doctor wouldn't mind a patient hearing a second opinion. Ask somebody qualified, and ask family and friends for somebody they might know who's qualified. Asking on an internet forum leaves you open to misinformation from people you've got no reason to trust."

sweetiefreck replied: "The dose is within the normal range for adults. Your doctor probably knows what he's suggesting."

holey moley replied: "5mg is still a pretty small dose of Abilify. There are people in the bipolar support group I go to who are your size and take 20mg. Trust your psychiatrist. I'm sure he/she prescribes this medication every day."

WillR replied: "Your doctor knows far more about medicine than you. If he/she says that 5mg is going to be your dose, then it will be your dose. Of course, there is always a risk to medicine - but the point is that the benefits outweigh the risks, and this is why your doctor is prescribing these drugs to you. If it bothers you, you are well within your rights to obtain a second opinion."

The dr. proscribed my 5 yo abilify should i give it to him? Chistian is ADHD and they gave him Vyvance which he has been on for a month now but also proscribed him Abilify because he gets mean with the kids at school. I have heard so much bad about it but then i think why would the dr. proscribe it to him though so im unsure weather i should give it to him or not please someone that knows more about it if you could tell me something about it that would be great. they proscribed him MG 2. and he is 5 years old. thank you amy if you want you can email me directly is

J B replied: "You took your child to his doctor to get help and now you are questioning whether you should give him medication that might help his behavior? All medications have some side effects and most of those go away after the first two weeks of taking a new med. If your child is having problems at school and this medication might help him to cope better at school and not become an outcast of his class, why would you question your doctor's decision. Give the medication a try."

I was just diagnosed with bipolar disorder and i have a sample of Abilify, what does it make you feel like? so, yea. Abilify (aripiprazole) 5 mg. what does it make you feel like? and what would it make you feel like for someone who isnt schizophrenic or manic-depressive?

Your Friendly Jewish Accountant replied: "Abilify isn't used for bipolar exclusively, and I can't tell you what it's like because it's never been prescribed to me (it wouldn't work if the did). If you didn't need it, you'd probably just fall asleep. Dumb. If you actually have bipolar disorder, take it and see."

Andy replied: "I took it for bipolar 1 disorder. It worked for my symptoms but it made me super restless. (a condition they called akathisia) They tried other the standard treatment for the restlessness like Cogentin and Artane but neither worked for me. So in the end I had to give up on Abilify and switch to another medication. I function much better now."

gardensallday replied: "I hope abilify isn't the first thing that was tried. Standard first treatments would be lithium (for pure manias), depakote (more for "mixed moods), or lamictal (for more depression symptoms). Tegretol is another mood stabilizer, but is less often prescribed. Abilify is an add on med. Not generally a standalone med. I wonder if your doc is unduly influenced by drug reps. Maybe you tried and failed on other drugs already. I was allergic to abilfy. I think it may have helped, some. dunno. I got a rash after 5 or 6 days."

Donna replied: "I am bipolar and I cannot take abilify. It makes me agitated like crazy. Since you are newly diagnosed it may take several times to find the right meds for you. This is agravating but hang in there. If one med does not work, then have your doc change the med. Often it takes more than one med to get your symptoms under control. Just keep trying, it will get better."

Does it matter how much Abilify I take to help Zoloft (antidepressant) work better? I used to take 5 mg of Abilify but went down to 2.5 mg because of a side effect of muscle spasms that I cannot stand or function with. I suspect that might be why my depression is getting worse? If that's the case, then would an even high dosage than 5 mg help with the depression? (I'm open to the idea of taking Benztropine to counteract the muscle spasms.)

lil bit replied: "Yes, you may want to try it. I take 10 mg of Abilify along with another anti-depressant. Abilify has been the best in fighting fatigue (residual depression)"

shaneris5 replied: "Check out medications at: * & & & & A medication interactions function is here* See: MEDICATIONS INTERACT: DANGERS OF MEDICATION INTERACTIVITY! in section 81, at Drugs.com - Abilify: Side Effects of This Medicine Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. Check with your healthcare professional immediately if any of the following side effects occur: More common Difficulty speaking; drooling; loss of balance control; muscle trembling, jerking, or stiffness; restlessness; shuffling walk; stiffness of limbs; twisting movements of body; uncontrolled movements, especially of face, neck, and back ~~~ You are already suffering the side effects of one medication, and the risks of interactions multiply with every new one added. There are alternatives to Abilify, but your mental health care provider may be receiving an incentive to prescribe, or have a close relationship with the drug co. I suggest that you check out: MEDICATIONS. SHOULD NEUROLEPTICS USE BE RESTRICTED? and, although Abilify is not an antidepressant, also see: ANTIDEPRESSANT USE, in section 1, at ezy build. A multidimensional treatment for depression is shown is section 2, at ezy build; see page R first, and: DEPRESSION: PAGE Z.2 - DRUG TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION IS WRONG! Eventually, read the rest of the section. Schizophreniform disorders are addressed in section 40, and bipolar disorder in section 10, with non medication based alternative, and complementary treatments shown."

Ahorn replied: "I would recommend you to watch following DVD that is available online if you have fast internet. It's told by psychiatrists, psychologists and people who worked for pharmaceutical companies. It informs you - beside other things - about side effects that are not often being told by psychiatrists. It also suggests an alternative in the end. When you then make a decision to take antidepressants, you may be better prepared, educated and understand what's going on when you encounter some bad side effects. I would say that these information are actually vital. The link sounds a little scary - that’s because many antidepressants have suicidal thoughts and impulses as side effects which you can also read inside the pack of some antidepressants. Watch trailer 1:55 min The whole DVD Fox News about pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly (Prozac and others) 3:36 min"

is Abilify sedating at 5 mg taken in the evening around 9:00 PM? I take Abilify in the morning, but I am using it for an off-label reason. According to the shrink, I have delusions that need to be under control as well as severe anxiety. But it seems like I am tired at many points throughout the day and it kinda makes it extra harder to do things. I am debating whether its just my body as a response to everyday energy consumption or the med producing a sedating effect throughout the day. Is it possible? sorry if I said the morning, I take abilify in the evening.

♥~TacySay~♥ replied: "It didn't make me tired. But according to what I was told about it. It's supposed to used along with an antidepressant. You're probably used to the high tension from anxiety. Abilify is used for bi-polar symptoms which in my case my extreme high energy with anxiety. So being down to normal mode might feel like a drag to you. Oh yeah, she is right. It did make me drowsy at first. But it didn't stay that way. True true, at first yes."

Neely O'Hara replied: "Abilify can be sedating, especially when you start taking it. Try taking it in the evening."

answerqueen replied: "Good question.. My Doctor wants to put me on that or Seroquel to stabilize my mood but any time your on medicines they will have an effect in one way or the other so it could be.. If it continuess I'd talk to your Doctor again about it. Good luck"

gotta luv da Li replied: "Abilify is sedating for some, activating for others. You are a unique snowflake so how it effects you is how it effects you. But, yes, the med probably is having a mild effect on your functioning. If you just started, that it may well wear off. Side effects from head meads often do. If it is sedating, try it at night. Let your doc know what you are doing. It's always good to keep them informed. Point of clarification... Abilify is NOT meant to always be taken with an antidepressant. PS - If you already take it at night, it may depend on how long you've taken it. It's common for meds to have cognitive side effects for a while as your body and brain are getting used to them. Waiting a couple weeks to a month should give you an answer if it's going to last. If it's been that long, then talk to your doctor. There are other meds that you can try."

I have been taking Abilify (generic name aripiprazole) for bi-polar disorder for about 5 weeks now and for? the last 3 weeks i have been so sleepy that i can't even function...like i sleep about 20 hours a day now since it is christmas break from school...sleepiness is a side effect but how do i know if what i am going though is related to the med? When do side effects go away the med really helps me but i can't keep on sleeping my life away....please help!!!!

msraina888 replied: "Call your therapist or doctor whoever prescribed it, perhaps you need a lower dosage. Good luck."

colbuck8toes replied: "you really needd to check with your doc. stopping cold turkey can be a problem"

jayne beal replied: "hello sweetie, am sorry and very surprised to hear that. I took the same drug and couldn't last longer than about two weeks on because it made me so jittery...l.o.l. yes it knocked me out the first time but after that i was bouncing off the walls. have you tried lithium? look up drugs on the net. type in bi-polar medications and there should be some sights that will list the different meds you can try and their side effects. or you could try a pro plus counter active pill. check with doc first but a shot of caffine may well help. failing that...get the doc to change the pill but go in with your list of possibles so she knows you have educated yourself. keep a sleep diary so that she knows how badly this drug is affecting you. good luck"

chatsplas@sbcglobal.net replied: "Don't stop taking it. It may NOT be the right med for you, but you have to work with your doc about changing dosage or to diff meds. Get an appointment with your doc to talk about this. Do you see any change in sleepiness? Often symptoms one experiences over first two weeks will ease off or change after couple of weeks. But it sounds like something needs to be adjusted for you to function best. It can take time to get it right, but when you do, it allows you to more fully be yourself--on a more even keel."
